A grown male golden retriever weighs about 32 kg (about 70 lb), the middle of the American Kennel Club standard of 65 to 75 lb (29.5 to 34 kg). Females are lighter, at 55 to 65 lb (25 to 29.5 kg). Many pet goldens weigh more than this: about 30% of dogs in one large US study were overweight.

How much should a golden retriever weigh?
The American Kennel Club’s breed standard, approved in 1981, asks for males 23 to 24 in (58 to 61 cm) tall at the withers and 65 to 75 lb (29.5 to 34 kg), and females 21½ to 22½ in (55 to 57 cm) and 55 to 65 lb (25 to 29.5 kg). Our 32 kg sits in the middle of the male range.
The UK’s Royal Kennel Club standard gives heights only: 56 to 61 cm (22 to 24 in) for dogs and 51 to 56 cm (20 to 22 in) for bitches, with no weight at all. It also warns that the standard describes an ideal, so an individual dog will not necessarily match it. North American goldens are bred slightly taller than British ones, and separate show lines have developed on each side of the Atlantic.
What real golden retrievers weigh
The best measured data comes from the Morris Animal Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, which enrolled 3,044 pet goldens across the United States between 2012 and 2015, all aged six months to two years. At their first vet check, the median dog weighed 27.8 kg (61 lb) and stood 57.2 cm (22.5 in) at the withers.
Split by sex, intact males had a median of 29.1 kg and neutered males 32.5 kg (72 lb), while intact females had 24.8 kg and spayed females 27.5 kg. The neutered dogs were older on average, about 17 to 18 months against 11 months, so part of that gap is simply growth. The study’s authors found the medians fell within the breed standard for every group.
Overweight goldens
At the study’s first exams, vets scored each dog on a 9-point body condition scale, and 29% of the young goldens scored 5.5 or higher, which the study counts as overweight. A 2018 update from the study put the share of overweight or obese dogs at about 30%.
Timing of spaying or neutering mattered. Compared with dogs left intact, goldens neutered at one year old or younger had twice the risk of being overweight or obese, and those neutered after their first birthday had a 40% higher risk. The same update linked being overweight after neutering to more chronic orthopedic injuries that were not caused by accidents.
Where the breed comes from
Golden retrievers were developed at Guisachan, the Highland estate of Dudley Marjoribanks, later the first Baron Tweedmouth. In 1865 he bought Nous, a yellow pup from a litter of black wavy-coated retrievers, in Brighton. In 1868 Nous was bred to Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel, and their yellow pups, including Cowslip, Crocus and Primrose, are counted as the first golden retrievers.
The aim was a gundog that could fetch shot birds from both land and water. The Kennel Club first registered examples in 1903, the name Golden Retriever became official in 1920, and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1932.
The AKC standard is 65 to 75 lb for males and 55 to 65 lb for females. Our figure of 32 kg works out to about 70 lb, a typical adult male.
How much does a golden retriever puppy weigh at birth?
A 2022 study of Golden and Labrador litters found most golden pups weighed up to 630 g (about 22 oz) at birth. Pups under about 295 g (10 oz), the lightest 5%, may be underweight, and lighter pups were more likely to die in their first week.
How tall is a golden retriever?
Males stand 23 to 24 in (58 to 61 cm) at the withers and females 21½ to 22½ in (55 to 57 cm) under the AKC standard. The UK standard allows a bit more spread: 56 to 61 cm for males and 51 to 56 cm for females.
Are male golden retrievers bigger than females?
Yes. The AKC standard puts males about 10 lb (4.5 kg) heavier and 1½ in taller. In the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, intact young males had a median weight of 29.1 kg against 24.8 kg for intact young females.
How do I know if my golden retriever is overweight?
Vets judge this with a body condition score, not weight alone, because a tall male can carry 34 kg comfortably while a small female would be heavy at that weight. On the 9-point scale used in the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, a score of 5.5 or more counted as overweight.
