The Fortnite Battle Bus weighs about 12 tonnes (roughly 26,500 lb) by our estimate. Epic Games has never given it an official weight. Under the balloon it is a big school bus, and real full-size school buses weigh around that much. The hot-air balloon’s envelope, burner and fuel add only about 300 kg.

Where the 12 tonnes comes from
Epic has never published a weight, size or spec for the Battle Bus. The Fortnite Wiki describes it as a blue-painted school bus hung under a large hot-air balloon that inflates with a blue flame. So we started from real buses. Manufacturers rate full-size conventional school buses like the Thomas Saf-T-Liner C2 and Blue Bird Vision at up to 33,000 lb (about 15 t) when fully loaded. In 2018 Inverse worked through the same question and settled on 26,500 lb for the bus itself, which is almost exactly 12 tonnes.
The balloon barely changes that. Wikipedia’s breakdown of an ordinary passenger balloon gives about 113 kg for the envelope, 23 kg for a double burner and 184 kg for three full fuel tanks: about 320 kg in all. The bus does the job of the basket, so we leave that out. That puts the whole thing at a little over 12 tonnes, which we round to 12.
Players are not counted. A match starts with 100 of them on board, and if each were an average adult the bus would weigh about 19 tonnes, more than a real school bus is allowed to carry.
Could that balloon really lift it?
Not even close. Air heated to 99 °C lifts about 1 kg for every 3.91 m³ of balloon, according to Wikipedia’s figures. Lifting 12 tonnes would take about 47,000 m³ of hot air (roughly 1.7 million cubic feet), and a little more once you add the heavier envelope that size would need. As a sphere, that is about 45 m (150 ft) across.
The most common passenger balloon holds about 2,800 m³, so you would need around 17 of them, and even the biggest commercial balloons, at about 17,000 m³, are less than half the size. Hot-air balloon pilot Gary Fehr told Inverse that you’d need “a couple million cubic feet as just a guess”, which matches the maths. The balloon in the game looks about 25 ft (7.6 m) wide, by Inverse’s estimate. Even as a full sphere that would lift only about 60 kg.
Running the air hotter does not save it. Nylon envelopes are limited to about 120 °C, and even at that limit you would still need around 39,000 m³. The game hints at its own answer: the bus has a BluGlo funnel on the front, Fortnite’s glowing fictional fuel.
About 26,500 lb, our estimate for the bus and its balloon gear. With 100 players on board it would be closer to 42,700 lb.
Is there an official weight for the Battle Bus?
No. Epic Games has never given the Battle Bus a weight or any other measurements. Every figure you see, including ours, is worked out from real school buses and hot-air balloons.
How big would a hot-air balloon need to be to lift the Battle Bus?
About 47,000 m³ (1.7 million cubic feet), roughly a 45 m (150 ft) sphere. That is about 17 ordinary passenger balloons, and far bigger than the balloon the bus has in the game.
How many players fit in the Battle Bus?
A standard Battle Royale match drops 100 players from it. If each weighed as much as an average adult, they would add about 7 tonnes, bringing the bus to around 19 tonnes.
Has anyone built a real Battle Bus?
Epic made a 40 by 30 ft (12 by 9 m) inflatable Battle Bus balloon for E3 2018 in Los Angeles, and a life-size Battle Bus went on display at Universal CityWalk in Hollywood in 2021. No weights were published for either.
