How heavy is Groot?

3.6 t7,940 lb

A fully grown Groot weighs 8,000 lb, about 3,600 kg, according to Marvel’s official comics profile, which puts him at 23 ft (7 m) tall. That is the comic-book Groot at full height. The movies never give a weight, and their Groot is much smaller: scaled down to his 2.4 m height, he would weigh roughly 145 kg.

Where the 8,000 lb comes from

Marvel’s own character page for the comics Groot says that at full height he can reach 23 feet tall and weigh 8,000 pounds. That is 7 m and about 3,600 kg, the number we use.

The same page has a stat box that says “23' (variable)” and “4.1 tons (variable)”, the figures from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z (2010). Read as US tons, 4.1 tons is 8,200 lb or about 3,720 kg, so Marvel’s two numbers differ by about 3%. Both carry the word “variable” for a reason: Groot can regrow his whole body from a single twig, and in the comics he can also grow far past 7 m when he needs to.

Does 3.6 tonnes make sense for a 7 m tree?

Pretty much. A person 1.75 m tall takes up about 70 litres. Scale that body up to 7 m, four times taller, and the volume grows 4 × 4 × 4 = 64 times, to about 4.5 cubic metres. Dividing 3,630 kg by that volume gives a density of about 810 kg per cubic metre.

That is very close to seasoned oak, which the Engineering ToolBox lists at 600 to 900 kg per cubic metre (American white oak at 770). So the official weight fits a 7 m humanoid built from dense hardwood.

How heavy is the movie Groot?

Marvel Studios has never given one. The best we can do is take the same 810 kg per cubic metre and scale it to the heights measured on screen. Dimensions.com puts the 2014 Groot at about 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in), which works out to roughly 145 kg (320 lb). A SYFY Wire growth analysis used a taller 12 ft 4 in for that Groot, which would mean about 560 kg, so treat these as rough guides.

The Groot after that is a different tree. James Gunn has said Baby Groot is the son of the first Groot, grown from a twig Rocket planted. Baby Groot stands about 26 cm (10 in), which by the same maths is under 200 g, and the adolescent Groot of Avengers: Infinity War is about 1.63 m, around 45 kg or less given how thin he is. By Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 he has grown bigger and bulkier than the first Groot.

The first film does show his stats once: the Nova Corps lineup screen lists his “phase of growth” as 370 microbules and his weight as 4,258 grets, units that exist only in the Guardians universe.
