A real-size Minecraft block of diamond would weigh about 3,510 kg (7,738 lb), by our calculation. Minecraft gives no weights, but a block is one cubic metre, and real diamond weighs about 3.51 grams per cubic centimetre. That is roughly 17.55 million carats, more than 5,600 times the largest rough diamond ever found.
Minecraft never gives a weight for anything, so this is our calculation. What the game does fix is size: the Minecraft Wiki says most solid blocks are 1 metre high, so a full block is one cubic metre, or 1,000,000 cubic centimetres.
Diamond is almost pure carbon, about 99.95 percent according to GIA. Measured samples have a density of 3.50 to 3.53 g/cm³, with an average of 3.51 g/cm³. So 1,000,000 cm³ × 3.51 g = 3,510,000 g, which is 3,510 kg or about 7,738 lb. A cubic metre of water weighs about 1,000 kg, so the diamond block is roughly 3.5 times heavier than the same box of water.
The natural spread in density moves the answer only a little, from about 3,500 to 3,530 kg. We left out any frame or setting: in the game the block is a solid cube with a texture that is just the gold block’s, tinted blue.
How many carats is that?
Gem diamonds are weighed in metric carats. One carat is exactly 200 milligrams (0.2 g), a definition adopted in 1907 by the General Conference on Weights and Measures and taken up by the United States in 1913. A carat splits into 100 points of 2 mg each.
Divide the block by that and you get 3,510,000 g ÷ 0.2 g = 17,550,000 carats. The largest gem-quality rough diamond ever found, the Cullinan, was dug up in South Africa in 1905 and weighed 3,106 carats (621.2 g). A diamond block would weigh as much as about 5,650 Cullinans. The biggest stone cut from it, the 530.2-carat Great Star of Africa in the British Sovereign’s Sceptre, weighs just 106 g.
What the diamonds inside would weigh
A block of diamond is crafted from nine diamonds, and breaks back down into nine. If each diamond is a ninth of the block, one Minecraft diamond would weigh 390 kg (860 lb) and, as a cube, measure about 48 cm on a side. That is 1.95 million carats per diamond.
At that rate a diamond pickaxe, which takes three diamonds, carries 1,170 kg of diamond in its head. A full set of diamond armor takes 24 diamonds (5 for the helmet, 8 for the chestplate, 7 for the leggings and 4 for the boots), which comes to 9,360 kg (about 20,600 lb).
A beacon made of diamond
The heaviest thing most players do with blocks of diamond is build a beacon pyramid. A full four-level pyramid needs 164 blocks: 9, 25, 49 and 81 from top to bottom. Built entirely from diamond, that would be 164 × 3,510 kg = about 576 tonnes (1.27 million lb) of diamond. Most players use iron, gold, emerald or netherite blocks instead, or mix them.
You can also find blocks of diamond without mining. Woodland mansions can contain an obsidian room and a lava room, and each has a single block of diamond at its center.
