How heavy is a real-size Minecraft iron block?

7.87 t17,400 lb

A Minecraft block of iron at real size would weigh 7,874 kg (17,359 lb), nearly 8 tonnes. That is our calculation, not a game number: Minecraft gives blocks no weight, but every block is a cube 1 metre on each side, and solid iron weighs 7,874 kg per cubic metre.

Where the 7,874 kg comes from

Minecraft never gives a weight for any block, so this is our own calculation. What the game does fix is size: the Minecraft Wiki describes the world as a grid of 1 cubic metre cells, with most solid blocks 1 m (about 3 ft 3 in) tall. A block of iron fills one whole cell.

Pure iron has a density of 7.874 g/cm³ at room temperature, which is 7,874 kg per cubic metre, or 7.87 times the density of water. One cubic metre of it therefore weighs 1 × 7,874 = 7,874 kg. We assume the block is solid iron all the way through, which fits the game: it is crafted from nine ingots and can be broken back down into the same nine.

Iron or steel?

Most real metal called iron today is some kind of steel, iron with a little carbon and other elements mixed in. Depending on the alloy, steel weighs 7,750 to 8,050 kg per cubic metre, so a steel block would come out between 7.75 and 8.05 tonnes. Whichever you pick, the answer stays close to 8 tonnes.

Heat changes it a little too. Iron melts at 1,538 °C, and the liquid is less dense, at 6.98 g/cm³. A cubic metre of molten iron would weigh about 6,980 kg, almost a tonne less than the solid block.

Ingots, golems, anvils and beacons

Since a block of iron is crafted from 9 iron ingots, each ingot is a ninth of a cubic metre. At real scale that is about 875 kg (1,929 lb) per ingot, and about 97 kg per iron nugget, since nine nuggets make an ingot.

The same arithmetic works for anything built from iron blocks. An iron golem takes four blocks, about 31.5 tonnes of iron. An anvil takes three blocks plus four ingots, 31 ingots in all, which comes to about 27.1 tonnes. A full four-level beacon pyramid made of iron uses 164 blocks, or about 1,291 tonnes, and a single stack of 64 blocks in your inventory would be about 504 tonnes.

About as heavy

Questions

How much does a Minecraft iron block weigh in pounds?

About 17,359 lb, which is 7,874 kg, or roughly 8.7 US tons. That assumes a solid cube of pure iron 1 m on each side.

How big is a block in Minecraft?

One metre on each side, so one cubic metre. The Minecraft Wiki gives most solid blocks a height of 1 m, about 3.28 ft.

How many iron ingots are in a block of iron?

Nine. You craft a block from nine ingots in a 3 × 3 grid and can turn it back into nine ingots, so at real size each ingot would weigh about 875 kg.

How much would a Minecraft anvil weigh in real life?

About 27.1 tonnes (roughly 59,800 lb) if it held all the iron that goes into it. The recipe uses three blocks of iron and four ingots, 31 ingots in total.

How much iron is in a full beacon pyramid?

A full four-level pyramid needs 164 mineral blocks. Built from iron, that is about 1,291 tonnes (about 2.85 million lb) of real iron.
