How heavy is the Statue of Liberty?

204 t450,000 lb

The Statue of Liberty weighs about 204 tonnes (450,000 lb, or 225 US short tons), the long-quoted figure for the copper statue on its iron frame. That excludes the pedestal and foundation, which add over 23,000 tonnes. The National Park Service now gives a higher estimate of 254 t (560,000 lb).

Where the 204 tonnes comes from

The usual total is 450,000 lb. In the US that is written as 225 tons, but those are short tons of 2,000 lb, not metric tonnes. Converted, it comes to 204 tonnes, which is the weight we use in the game.

For decades the National Park Service listed two parts: 62,000 lb (31 short tons) of copper and 250,000 lb (125 short tons) for the framework. Guinness World Records converts these to 28.1 t of copper and 113.4 t of steel. Those two add up to only about 141 t, and the sources that give the 225-ton total do not say what makes up the rest.

Why some figures are much higher

Nobody has put the assembled statue on a scale, so every weight is worked out from its materials, and the estimates have grown. In 1984, as the restoration began, Engineering News-Record described an "80-ton copper envelope". The NPS fact page now says the statue has been estimated at 560,000 lb (254 t), of which 179,200 lb (81.3 t) is copper.

The NPS pages do not agree with each other either. Its statistics page now lists 176,000 lb of copper and 440,000 lb of framework, which would make about 279 t. So a fair answer is somewhere between about 200 and 280 tonnes for the statue alone, depending on the source.

A thin skin on an iron skeleton

The copper skin is only 3/32 of an inch (2.4 mm) thick, which the NPS compares to two pennies placed together. It hangs on a framework designed by Gustave Eiffel, a central iron pylon with a web of thinner iron bars that holds the skin in place and lets it move. In 50 mph winds the statue can sway up to 3 inches and the torch up to 6 inches.

The 1984 to 1986 restoration replaced the corroded iron armature bars with stainless steel. ENR counted 1,350 of them and PBS NOVA 1,800, with about 35,000 lb of armature replaced in all. The torch, which had leaked since alterations in 1916, was replaced with a gold-leafed copper replica of Bartholdi's original. The old torch, about 3,500 lb according to ENR, is now in the Statue of Liberty Museum.

The pedestal and foundation

The statue is light next to what it stands on. The NPS puts the concrete foundation at 54,000,000 lb (about 24,500 t) and, on another page, the pedestal at about 52 million lb (23,590 t). Either way, the base outweighs the statue about a hundred times over.

From the top of the base to the torch the statue is 46.05 m (151 ft 1 in) tall. With the pedestal and foundation, the torch tip is 92.99 m (305 ft 1 in) above the ground.
