Kong from Kong: Skull Island (2017) weighs 158 tonnes, about 348,000 lb, according to Warner Bros.’ official promo site, which put him at 104 ft (31.6 m). That is only one Kong, though: he has been anywhere from 18 ft to 337 ft tall across his films, and most versions have no official weight at all.

Where the 158 tonnes comes from
For Kong: Skull Island, Warner Bros. ran an official promo site called “Kong-Sized”. It lists Kong at 104 ft (31.6 m) and 158 tons, sums it up as “1 Kong = 10 buses” next to a 16-ton school bus, and says he eats about 700 times the 40 lb a day an adult male gorilla does, which is roughly 28,000 lb of food daily.
The site is American and never says which ton it means. Read as US short tons, 158 tons is about 143 tonnes (316,000 lb). We use 158 tonnes, the number as printed, but the real intended figure could be 10% lower.
No later film has given Kong an official weight. Wikizilla notes that the only number tied to the Godzilla vs. Kong version comes from a collectible figure’s booklet, which misprints it as “90,63 tons”, and that a 2026 episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters gives an estimate of 70,000 to 90,000 tons, which fits none of the film figures.
Kong in every movie
The 1933 original was never one size. Its models were scaled to 18 ft on Skull Island and 24 ft in New York, director Merian C. Cooper cheated him up to around 60 ft in some shots, and the posters sold him as 50 ft and 20 tons. The 1976 remake used 42 ft on the island and 55 ft in New York, and Peter Jackson’s 2005 Kong stayed a steady 25 ft throughout.
Toho’s Japanese Kongs were far bigger on paper: 45 m and 20,500 tonnes in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), then 20 m and 10,000 tonnes in King Kong Escapes (1967). The 1962 Kong is only about 1.4 times taller than the Skull Island Kong but listed at about 130 times the weight, a good sign these numbers were never meant to line up.
In Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Kong is still a young ape in Skull Island, which is set in 1973. By Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) he has grown to 337 ft (102 m), the height Warner Bros. marketing and the Japanese theater program give, and he stays that size in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). The opening credits of Godzilla vs. Kong still showed his old Skull Island height, which director Adam Wingard later called a mistake.
How heavy is the 102 m Kong?
Nobody official has said, so here is our estimate. When an animal grows while keeping the same shape, its weight rises with the cube of its height. Going from 31.6 m to 102 m is 3.2 times taller, and 3.2 cubed is about 34, so 158 tonnes becomes roughly 5,300 tonnes.
Treat that as a rough guide, not a fact. The later Kong looks bulkier than the 2017 one, which would push it up, and nothing in the films pins down his density.
Kong vs. Godzilla
Godzilla is far heavier. Legendary’s Godzilla was listed at 90,000 tons in 2014 and 99,634 tons from Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) onward, at 393 ft (120 m) tall. Even our 5,300-tonne estimate for the grown-up Kong is about a nineteenth of that, and the 158-tonne Skull Island Kong is less than 0.2% of it.
The Godzilla vs. Kong opening credits gave Godzilla 164,000 tons, a number borrowed from a 2014 Popular Mechanics article, and that too was put down to the rushed title sequence. Kong makes up for the gap with agility and his axe, and in the film he still manages to shove and throw Godzilla around.
It depends on the film. He was 18 to 24 ft in the 1933 original (50 ft in the ads), 25 ft in Peter Jackson’s 2005 version, 104 ft (31.6 m) in Kong: Skull Island, and 337 ft (102 m) in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong.
How much does King Kong weigh in Godzilla vs. Kong?
There is no official figure for the 102 m Kong. Scaling up the 158-tonne Skull Island Kong to his new height gives roughly 5,300 tonnes, but that is an estimate.
Who is heavier, Godzilla or King Kong?
Godzilla, by a wide margin. The MonsterVerse Godzilla is listed at 99,634 tons, while Kong is 158 tonnes in Skull Island and probably around 5,000 tonnes by Godzilla vs. Kong.
How heavy was the original 1933 King Kong?
RKO’s posters advertised him as 50 ft tall and 20 tons. On screen he was usually much smaller, since the models were scaled to an ape 18 to 24 ft tall.
Is King Kong still growing?
In the MonsterVerse, yes. He is a young ape at 104 ft in Kong: Skull Island (set in 1973) and has more than tripled in height by Godzilla vs. Kong.
