How heavy is the Ender Dragon?

40 t88,200 lb

The Ender Dragon weighs about 40 tonnes (roughly 88,000 lb) by our estimate, about as much as a big humpback whale. Minecraft never gives it a weight. We took a fleshed-out body, neck and tail of about 55 m³ and gave it a light, bird-like build at roughly 0.7 times the density of water.

Where the 40 tonnes comes from

Minecraft lists no weight for the Ender Dragon, only its size. In Java Edition the whole dragon sits inside a box 16 blocks across and 8 blocks tall, and a block is 1 m, so that is 16 m by 8 m. Most of that box is air, because it has to make room for the wings.

Weight is volume times density. We pictured the dragon as a real animal, with a rounded body, neck and tail filling about 55 m³. Most animals are close to the density of water, 1,000 kg per m³, which would make the dragon 55 tonnes. But it flies, so we gave it a bird-like build with air sacs and hollow bones, at about 730 kg per m³. 55 m³ × 730 kg/m³ ≈ 40 tonnes.

The 55 m³ is our own call, and the game leaves room either way. Count the model’s cubes one by one (head, neck, body, tail, legs and wing bones) and you get only about 26 m³, because the blocky body is slim: 1.5 blocks wide and 4 long. At a bird-like density that is about 18 tonnes. The game’s damage hitboxes are much roomier: 1 × 1 × 1 for the head, 3 × 3 × 3 for the neck, 5 × 5 × 3 for the body and three 2 × 2 × 2 boxes for the tail, 127 m³ in all. Filled with water-dense flesh, that would be 127 tonnes.

How big the Ender Dragon is

Measured from the model in Mojang’s Bedrock Edition files, the dragon is about 16.5 m from snout to tail tip: a 2 m head, a neck of five segments (about 3 m), a 4 m body and a tail of twelve segments (7.5 m). Its wings span about 15.5 m. Each wing is two 3.5 m bones with a square sheet of membrane behind each, and the rear legs are over 4 m long.

The Minecraft Wiki calls it the largest mob that spawns naturally in the game, and notes that its hitbox, especially around the wings, is larger than the dragon itself. That is why players get knocked back without standing very close. Bedrock Edition gives it a smaller collision box than Java: 13 blocks wide and 4 tall.

Could a 40-tonne dragon fly?

Not in the real world. The heaviest flying bird, the kori bustard, weighs up to about 18 kg (40 lb), according to Guinness World Records. At 40 tonnes the dragon is over 2,000 times heavier, and with about 49 m² of wing membrane, every square metre of wing would have to hold up more than 800 kg.

In the game none of that matters. The Bedrock Edition entity file simply switches gravity off for the dragon, and it flies straight through blocks, destroying most of them as it goes.

Questions

Does Minecraft say how much the Ender Dragon weighs?

No. The game gives its size, health and attacks, but no weight. Our 40 tonnes is an estimate from its size and an assumed bird-like density.

How big is the Ender Dragon in blocks?

In Java Edition its bounding box is 16 blocks wide and 8 tall. The model itself is about 16.5 blocks from snout to tail with a wingspan of about 15.5 blocks.

How much health does the Ender Dragon have?

200 health points, or 100 hearts. Hits anywhere other than its head do only about a quarter of the damage, so if you never hit the head it effectively has 800.

Is the Ender Dragon the biggest mob in Minecraft?

It is the largest mob that spawns naturally, according to the Minecraft Wiki. Its wings alone span about 15.5 blocks.

How much XP does the Ender Dragon drop?

12,000 experience points the first time you kill it, and 500 for every respawned dragon after that.
