How heavy is an iron golem?

31.5 t69,400 lb

An iron golem would weigh about 31.5 tonnes (around 69,400 lb) at real size, by our estimate. Minecraft gives mobs no weight, so we counted what you build one from: four blocks of iron, each a cubic metre of solid iron. A solid iron body in the golem’s actual shape would weigh nearer 11 tonnes.

Where the 31.5 tonnes comes from

Minecraft never gives a weight for anything, so this is our estimate. What the game does fix is size: every block is a cube 1 metre on each side. To build an iron golem you stand four blocks of iron in a T shape and put a carved pumpkin (or a jack o’lantern) on top.

Pure iron weighs 7,874 kg per cubic metre. Four cubic metres of it is 4 × 7,874 = 31,496 kg, which we round to 31.5 tonnes. We left the pumpkin out: it is hollow, and even a solid cube of pumpkin flesh would add well under a tonne. In game terms the golem also eats a lot of iron, since each block is crafted from nine ingots, so that is 36 ingots in one golem.

Does that much iron fit inside a golem?

Not really. The golem’s model is built from boxes measured in pixels, 16 to a block. Its body is 18 × 12 × 11 pixels, each arm 4 × 30 × 6, each leg 6 × 16 × 5 and the head 8 × 10 × 8, plus a small waist and that famous nose. Add it all up and you get about 5,700 cubic pixels, or 1.4 m³. Solid iron in that shape would weigh about 11 tonnes, so the four blocks hold nearly three times the iron the golem has room for.

Other ways of counting give other answers. Fill the whole Java Edition hitbox (1.4 m wide and 2.7 m tall) with iron and you get about 41.7 tonnes. Make the golem hollow, with walls one pixel (about 6 cm) thick, and it drops to roughly 6 tonnes. We kept the recipe number for the game because it is the one rule Minecraft actually gives you.

What you get back

When an iron golem dies it drops only 3 to 5 iron ingots, plus up to two poppies. At a ninth of a cubic metre per ingot, five ingots is about 4.4 tonnes of real iron, so most of the 36 ingots you put in are gone for good. That is why players farm village golems rather than build their own for iron.

Iron also works as repair. A golem has 100 health and shows more cracks as it loses it, at 75%, 50% and 25%. Using one iron ingot on it restores 25 health, so four ingots take a badly cracked golem back to full.

Questions

How much does an iron golem weigh in pounds?

About 69,400 pounds, or roughly 34.7 US tons, if you count the four cubic metres of iron it is built from. A solid iron body in its actual shape would be closer to 24,000 pounds.

How tall is an iron golem in Minecraft?

2.7 blocks, so 2.7 m (about 8 ft 10 in), and 1.4 blocks wide in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition it is 2.9 blocks tall, which was also its Java height before version 1.9.

Does Minecraft give the iron golem an official weight?

No. The game lists its size, health and drops, but no weight for any mob. Every number here, including ours, is worked out from block sizes and the density of real iron.

How many iron ingots does it take to make an iron golem?

36. You need four blocks of iron, and each block is crafted from nine ingots. A killed golem gives back only 3 to 5 ingots.

How much health does an iron golem have?

100 health points, which is 50 hearts. It cracks as it takes damage, and each iron ingot you use on it heals 25 points.
