The RX-78-2 Gundam weighs 43.4 tonnes, about 95,700 lb, according to its official specs, which put it at 18 m tall. That is the bare machine: fully equipped with weapons and propellant, the same specs give 60 tonnes (about 132,300 lb). The real 18 m Gundam that moved in Yokohama weighed about 25 tonnes.
The RX-78-2 is the original Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam (1979). Its official spec sheet, repeated across Japanese references, lists a head height of 18.0 m, a base weight (hontai jūryō) of 43.4 t and a full weight (zenbi jūryō) of 60.0 t, along with Luna Titanium alloy armor, a 1,380 kW generator and 55,500 kg of total thrust.
The two weights answer different questions. The base weight is the machine on its own. The full weight, literally “fully equipped weight”, is the Gundam ready for battle with its armament and propellant on board. The game uses the base weight, the figure most often quoted for the Gundam.
Lighter than a Zaku
For an 18 m robot, 43.4 tonnes is light, and it is lighter than its enemies. The Zeon MS-06F Zaku II is shorter at 17.5 m but listed at 56.2 t base and 73.3 t full, about 13 tonnes more than the Gundam either way.
In the story the Gundam is an experimental Federation prototype built around Luna Titanium alloy armor, while the Zaku is Zeon’s mass-produced workhorse. The Gundam’s generator is also the stronger of the two, at 1,380 kW against the Zaku’s 976 kW.
The real life-size Gundams
The first 1:1 RX-78-2 went up in Odaiba, Tokyo, in July 2009 for the series’ 30th anniversary: 18 m tall and 35 tonnes, built from fiberglass-reinforced plastic over a steel frame so it could be taken apart. It drew 4.15 million visitors in two months, then moved to Shizuoka and later to DiverCity Tokyo Plaza, where it stood until March 2017. Its replacement there is a different machine, the 19.7 m Unicorn Gundam, which weighs 49 tonnes.
The Gundam that actually moved stood at Gundam Factory Yokohama from December 2020 to March 31, 2024. Called the RX-78F00, it was 18 m tall and weighed about 25 tonnes, 10 tonnes less than the 2009 statue, with motors in 24 joints that let it move its head, arms and legs and take a step forward.
Its parts were then reused for a static statue at Expo 2025 in Osaka, the RX-78F00/E, shown kneeling with one hand raised to the sky from April 13 to October 13, 2025. In that pose it is 16.72 m tall to the fingertips and weighs 49.1 tonnes, more than the official base weight of the fictional Gundam.
Its official head height is 18.0 m, about 59 ft, roughly a six-story building. The life-size statues in Odaiba and Yokohama were built to the same 18 m.
What is the difference between the Gundam’s base weight and full weight?
The base weight, 43.4 t, is the machine alone. The full weight, 60.0 t, is the Gundam fully equipped for combat, with its weapons and propellant.
How much did the life-size Gundam statue weigh?
The 2009 Odaiba statue weighed 35 tonnes. The moving Gundam in Yokohama weighed about 25 tonnes, and the kneeling statue made from its parts for Expo 2025 weighs 49.1 tonnes.
Is the Gundam heavier than a Zaku?
No. The Zaku II is listed at 56.2 t base and 73.3 t full, about 13 tonnes more than the Gundam, even though it is half a meter shorter.
How heavy is the Unicorn Gundam statue in Odaiba?
The life-size RX-0 Unicorn Gundam at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is 19.7 m tall and weighs 49 tonnes. It replaced the RX-78-2 statue in 2017.
