How heavy is Kurama the Nine-Tailed Fox?

94,000 t207,000,000 lb

Kurama weighs about 94,000 tonnes (roughly 207 million lb) by our estimate. Naruto never gives the Nine-Tails an official height or weight. We took a 6 kg red fox and scaled it up to a body about 100 m tall, 250 times the size, which multiplies its weight by about 15.6 million.

Where the 94,000 tonnes comes from

There is no official number. The databooks list heights for some giant summons, such as Gamabunta’s 17 m, but Kurama’s profile has neither a height nor a weight. So we started from a real red fox, which stands 35 to 50 cm at the shoulder and usually weighs 4 to 8 kg. British adults average about 6.5 kg for males and 5.5 kg for females, so we used 6 kg and a 40 cm shoulder height.

For Kurama we assumed a height of about 100 m, in line with common fan estimates. That is 250 times a 40 cm fox. Weight grows with the cube of size, because the body gets taller, longer and wider all at once: 250 × 250 × 250 is 15,625,000. Multiply by 6 kg and you get 93,750 tonnes, which we round to 94,000 tonnes.

This assumes Kurama is built like a giant fox, with ordinary flesh and fur. The story backs that up more than you might expect: the Gold and Silver Brothers survived being swallowed by it by eating the flesh of its stomach for two weeks.

How big Kurama is in the story

The best yardstick is Gamabunta, the toad boss, whom the databooks put at 17 m. When Minato summons him on top of the Nine-Tails during the attack on Konoha, the toad is only about the size of Kurama’s torso. Narutopedia also describes Kurama as roughly as tall as the Hokage Rock, with a pupil bigger than a tall human.

Those comparisons put Kurama several times Gamabunta’s height, but not at an exact figure, and the size of tailed beasts and summons changes from panel to panel. Height matters a lot here: at 75 m Kurama would weigh about 40,000 tonnes, and at 150 m over 300,000 tonnes.

Halves, cubs and a body made of chakra

Tailed beasts are giant forms of chakra, created when the Sage of Six Paths split the Ten-Tails into nine. Kurama was much smaller then, closer to an oversized fox cub that still towered over an adult.

Its size also changes when Minato splits it into a Yin half and a Yang half. Each one ends up less than half Kurama’s original size, yet still about as big as the other tailed beasts. Halving the height cuts the weight to an eighth, so each half would weigh around 11,700 tonnes at our density.

Questions

How much does Kurama weigh in pounds?

About 207 million pounds (94,000 tonnes), by our estimate. That is a 6 kg red fox scaled up to around 100 m tall.

How tall is Kurama?

There is no official height. In the story it dwarfs the 17 m Gamabunta and is roughly as tall as the Hokage Rock, and fan estimates usually put it around 100 m. We use 100 m for our weight.

Is there an official weight for Kurama?

No. The official databooks give heights and weights for the human characters and a height for some summons, but nothing for Kurama. Any number you see, including ours, is an estimate.

Who is heavier, Kurama or Gamabunta?

Kurama, by far. Gamabunta is officially 17 m tall and we estimate him at about 3,000 tonnes, so Kurama at 94,000 tonnes would be roughly 30 times heavier.

Is Kurama the biggest tailed beast?

It seems so. Even after Minato split it in two, each half was still roughly the size of the other tailed beasts. Kurama also has the most chakra of the nine, which is why it had to be sealed last.
