The Lance of Longinus weighs roughly 400 tonnes (about 882,000 lb) by our own estimate. Evangelion never gives an official weight. We took a 2.1 m, 4 kg aluminum replica and scaled it up 47 times in every direction, to fit an Eva about 80 m tall as in the Rebuild films.

Where the 400 tonnes comes from
There is no official weight, and no official length either. Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild films only show that the lance is longer than the Eva that holds it. The size of the Evas is the one solid number: the Rebuild films’ official record book (2008) puts them at about 70 m, or 80 m to the top of the shoulder pylons.
So we started from a real object. A handmade cosplay replica sold on Etsy is 2.1 m (83 in) long and weighs 4 kg (8.8 lb), with an aluminum alloy body in three parts. It is sized for a person about 1.7 m tall. An 80 m Eva is 80 ÷ 1.7 = about 47 times taller, which makes the lance about 99 m long. Weight grows with the cube of size, so 47 × 47 × 47 = about 104,000, and 4 kg × 104,000 = 415 tonnes. We round that to 400 t.
This is our calculation, not a figure from the anime or any guidebook. Treat it as a ballpark.
Why it could be much heavier or lighter
The biggest unknown is the material. In the story the lance is an alien artifact, made by a lost civilization and apparently alive. Designer Ikuto Yamashita has said he drew it as a single twisted strip of metal, to look like the simplest possible piece of ultimate technology. The replica is aluminum; the same shape in solid steel would be about three times heavier, around 1,200 tonnes.
Other replicas give other answers. A Damascus steel lance forged in 2012 by swordsmith Sadanao Mikami is 3.32 m long and weighs 22.2 kg. Scaled to the same 99 m, it comes to about 585 tonnes. Its exhibition text says the anime lance is much longer than an Eva, and this piece was made nearly twice a person’s height; scaled by 47 like ours, it would be 156 m long and about 2,300 tonnes. A titanium replica by artist Yokichi is 3.2 m but only 2.2 kg, which scales to just 65 tonnes.
The Eva’s size matters just as much. The TV series never fixes it: Newtype magazine and the original proposal give 40 m, while Gainax’s Hiroyuki Yamaga has said the units were meant to be taller than the 45 m Ultraman. At 40 m the scale factor drops to 23.5 and the lance to about 52 tonnes. Using the 70 m body height of the Rebuild Evas instead of 80 m gives about 280 tonnes.
The lance in the story, and in real life
In the TV series the lance is dug up in Antarctica with Adam and arrives at NERV on the deck of an aircraft carrier in episode 12. Rei drives it into Lilith in Terminal Dogma, then in episode 22 Unit-00 throws it like a javelin at the Angel Arael in orbit. It passes escape velocity and ends up on the Moon, until it returns in The End of Evangelion. SEELE’s nine Mass Production Evas carry copies with the same size and dimensions.
The real replicas keep getting bigger. In 2015 fans crowdfunded about 54.7 million yen toward a 100 million yen goal to send a small replica to the Moon, which fell short. In 2023 a steel company in Ube, director Hideaki Anno’s hometown, made one over 7 m tall weighing 1 tonne, to be driven into the ground at Tokiwa Park.
How much does the Lance of Longinus weigh in pounds?
About 882,000 lb (400 tonnes) by our estimate. There is no official weight; the number comes from scaling a 4 kg replica up to the size of an 80 m Eva.
How long is the Lance of Longinus?
No official length is given. The lance is drawn longer than the Evas, and scaling a 2.1 m replica to an 80 m Eva gives about 99 m, roughly the height of a 30-story building.
How tall are the Evas in Evangelion?
The TV series never says, and their size shifts from scene to scene; Newtype magazine and the original proposal give 40 m. In the Rebuild films they are about 70 m, or 80 m with the shoulder pylons, according to the official record book for Evangelion 1.0.
What is the Lance of Longinus made of?
The story never says. It is an artifact of the First Ancestral Race, said to be alive, and it can pierce any AT Field. Real replicas have been made from aluminum, titanium and Damascus steel.
Is the Lance of Longinus on the Moon?
In the TV series, yes, for a while. After Unit-00 throws it at Arael in episode 22 it leaves Earth’s orbit and lands on the Moon, then flies back to Earth during Third Impact in The End of Evangelion.
