How much does a 2×4 LEGO brick weigh?

The 2×4 brick, part number 3001, weighs 2.32 g (0.082 oz) in the catalogue of BrickLink, the LEGO-owned marketplace for buying single parts. The other part weights on this page come from the same catalogue.

Weights barely vary from brick to brick because the bricks are made so precisely. LEGO has moulded them from ABS plastic since 1963, when it replaced cellulose acetate, and its moulding machines work to tolerances as small as 0.01 mm (10 micrometres).

How strong is a LEGO brick?

In 2012, at the request of the BBC’s More or Less programme, engineers at the Open University crushed 2×2 bricks in a hydraulic press. On average a brick gave way at 4,240 newtons, the same as a mass of 432 kg (950 lb) resting on it. It did not shatter: it slowly squashed, like warm camembert.

Their test brick weighed 1.152 g, so it could carry the weight of about 375,000 identical bricks, a tower some 3.5 km (2.17 miles) tall. The lead engineer, Ian Johnston, thought a 2×4 brick would fail sooner. In practice no such tower could be built: it would buckle long before the bottom brick broke.

Six bricks, 915 million ways

The modern brick, with tubes underneath that grip the studs, was filed for a Danish patent on 28 January 1958. Six 2×4 bricks can be combined in 915,103,765 different ways.

LEGO makes them in huge numbers: about 36 billion elements a year, or roughly 1,140 every second. At 2.32 g each, a million 2×4 bricks would weigh 2.32 tonnes.
