How heavy is the One Ring?

8 g0.28 oz

The One Ring would weigh about 8 g (0.28 oz), the weight of a plain gold band sized for a man’s finger. That is our estimate: Tolkien never gave its weight, and says it seemed to change. The Ring made for Peter Jackson’s films is chunkier, about 17 g (0.6 oz) in 18ct gold.

Where the 8 g comes from

Tolkien describes the Ring as a plain gold band with no gem, and never weighs it, so we worked it out from the density of gold. A band 5 mm wide and 1.5 mm thick, sized for an adult man’s finger (about 19 mm across the inside), holds just under half a cubic centimetre of metal (0.48 cm³).

Pure gold weighs 19.32 g per cubic centimetre, which makes that band 9.3 g. Most real gold rings are 18ct, which the LBMA puts at about 15.4 g/cm³, giving 7.4 g. The Ring was forged by Sauron, not alloyed by a jeweller, so we went with 8 g, between the two. A slimmer or rounded band would be lighter, and a wide, thick one could be twice as heavy.

Why it felt heavier near Mordor

Even in the Shire the Ring is odd. In The Fellowship of the Ring (Book 1, Chapter 2, “The Shadow of the Past”), Bilbo had found that it “did not seem always of the same size or weight”. In the same chapter, when Frodo hands it to Gandalf, it feels “suddenly very heavy”, as if it does not want to be touched.

The weight grows as Frodo heads for Mordor. In The Two Towers (Book 4, Chapter 2, “The Passage of the Marshes”) he begins to feel it as “an actual weight dragging him earthwards”. By The Return of the King (Book 6, Chapter 3, “Mount Doom”) it torments him with every step.

That weight seems to be Frodo’s alone, though. When Sam lifts Frodo, Ring and all, onto his back on the slopes of Mount Doom, he is amazed to feel “the burden light”. The heaviness is the Ring’s hold on its bearer, not extra grams of gold.

The Rings made for the films

For Peter Jackson’s films, the Ring was made by Jens Hansen, a goldsmith in Nelson, New Zealand. In 1999 he submitted 15 prototypes in different weights and finishes. Once one was chosen, he and his son Thorkild made around 40 versions, sized for different actors’ fingers, with spares in case one went missing. The inscription you see on screen was added digitally.

According to Jens Hansen, the Ring filmed for the trilogy was 18ct yellow gold, 7 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick, and weighed about 17 g. Its band has about two and a half times the cross-section of our 5 by 1.5 mm estimate, which is why it comes out roughly twice as heavy.

The workshop also made the 8 inch ring that spins through the air in the prologue of The Fellowship of the Ring, though its weight was never published. Years later it turned a 6 inch steel copy, plated in 18ct gold, which weighs 2 kg and sits on a greenstone base in Nelson.

Questions

How much does the One Ring weigh in the books?

Tolkien never gives a number. He describes a plain gold ring whose size and weight seem to change, and which grows heavier for Frodo the closer he gets to Mordor.

How heavy was the One Ring prop in the Lord of the Rings films?

About 17 g (0.6 oz), according to Jens Hansen, who made it in 18ct yellow gold, 7 mm wide and 2.7 mm thick.

Why does the One Ring get heavier?

Tolkien ties it to the Ring’s growing power over Frodo as he nears Mordor. When Sam carries Frodo up Mount Doom he finds him light, so the weight is felt by the bearer rather than being real extra mass.

Is the One Ring made of real gold?

In the books it looks like plain gold but cannot be harmed, not even by dragon fire, and only the fire of Mount Doom can destroy it. The film Rings were made in 18ct gold, while the prototypes the Hansen family kept are sterling silver, some gold plated.

How many One Rings were made for the movies?

Jens Hansen and his son made around 40 versions in different sizes for the films, after 15 prototypes were tried out in 1999.
