How heavy is Superman?

105 kg231 lb

Superman weighs about 105 kg (230 lb). The DC Comics Encyclopedia lists the modern Superman at 6 ft 3 in and 235 lb (107 kg), while other profiles, including the 1990s cartoon’s, give 225 lb (102 kg). We use the middle of the two. It is a big but ordinary build: his strength comes from the sun, not extra mass.

Where the 105 kg comes from

DC has published several encyclopedias of its characters, and they do not all agree. The DC Comics Encyclopedia (DK, 2008 edition) gives Superman 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) and 235 lb (106.6 kg), and DC Database cites the same figures from DK’s Batman Character Encyclopedia for today’s Superman. A slightly lighter 225 lb (102 kg) at the same height is the number most fan references repeat, and it is the one DC Database lists for the Superman of the 1990s animated series.

Our 105 kg (about 231 lb) sits between those two. It is not an official figure on its own, but it is within 2 kg of both.

Superman through the eras

Superman has not always been 6 ft 3 in. The original Golden Age Superman, later placed on Earth-Two, is listed at 6 ft 2 in and 222 lb in DC’s 1986 Who’s Who directory and the Infinite Crisis Secret Files. The Silver Age Superman of Earth-One is also 6 ft 2 in but lighter, at 215 lb (97.5 kg).

The 6 ft 3 in height has been standard since at least Who’s Who in the DC Universe #1 (1990), and Dexerto notes it was confirmed again in JLA: Secret Files #1 (1997) and Superman: Secret Files (1998). With every modern version at that height and 225 to 235 lb, Superman’s weight has only ever moved by about 9 kg across more than 80 years of comics.

Why isn’t the Man of Steel heavier?

Because his powers were never about mass. Co-creator Jerry Siegel based the idea on John Carter of Mars, who is strong on a smaller planet, and recalled: “I visualized the planet Krypton as a huge planet, much larger than Earth.” Later stories explained Kryptonian strength by Krypton’s higher gravity, and Superman #146 (1961) tied his abilities to Earth’s yellow sun.

That is still how it works: DC Database’s summary of the modern Superman says that without solar energy he is physically like a fit human of his height and weight. So his 235 lb is simply a large, muscular man, with a body mass index of about 29, like a heavyweight athlete.

How heavy were the movie Supermen?

Actors have had to bulk up to fill the suit. Christopher Reeve added about 30 lb of muscle to a thin 188 lb frame for Superman (1978), on a training plan run by bodybuilder David Prowse, the man inside Darth Vader’s suit.

David Corenswet, Superman in James Gunn’s 2025 film, said on the Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast that he peaked at 238 lb while bulking and was about 228 to 230 lb when filming began. That is almost exactly the comics’ 225 to 235 lb.
