Tails weighs 20 kg (44.1 lb), according to his official profile on Sega’s Japanese Sonic Channel site, which lists him at 80 cm (2 ft 7 in) tall. That is modern Tails. Classic Tails, the smaller 1990s design, has his own profile at 60 cm and 15 kg (33.1 lb). He is the lightest of Sonic’s main trio.
The number is official. Tails’ character page on Sonic Channel, Sega’s Japanese site for the series, lists him as a male fox, 80 cm tall, weighing 20 kg. Fan wikis repeat the same figures, but they did not invent them: the weight is printed on Sega’s own profile.
The same page lists his likes as machines and mint candy, his dislike as thunder, and his special skill as flying by spinning his two tails. It gives no age.
Classic Tails is smaller
Classic Tails, the round, short design from the Mega Drive games, has a separate Sonic Channel profile: 60 cm and 15 kg. That is 20 cm shorter and 5 kg lighter than the modern version. The profile calls him an eager genius engineer and the pilot of Sonic’s biplane, the Tornado.
He first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in November 1992, designed by Yasushi Yamaguchi. His real name, Miles Prower, is a pun on “miles per hour”; Sega of America suggested the nickname Tails.
Next to Sonic, Knuckles and a real fox
On Sonic Channel, Sonic is 100 cm and 35 kg, and Knuckles is 110 cm and 40 kg. Tails at 20 kg weighs a little over half as much as Sonic and exactly half as much as Knuckles.
From Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on, players can fly as Tails, and he can grab Sonic and carry him. With the official numbers, that means lifting 35 kg, 1.75 times his own weight, on two spinning tails.
A real red fox is lighter. Adults weigh 2.2 to 14 kg (4.9 to 30.9 lb), so even a large 14 kg fox is 6 kg short of Tails.
