Hagrid weighs about 250 kg (550 lb) by our estimate for the film version, who is officially 8 ft 6 in tall. That is not canon: a Ministry of Magic file made as a prop for the films lists him at 289 lb, far too light for his size, and the taller Hagrid of the books would weigh much more.

Where the 250 kg comes from
Neither the books nor the films give Hagrid a believable weight, so 250 kg is our estimate. Weight grows with the cube of height when a body keeps its shape. Take a sturdy man of 1.8 m and 105 kg and scale him up to 2.4 m: that is 4/3 as tall, 4/3 cubed is 2.37, and 105 kg becomes about 250 kg (550 lb).
The official film height is a little more. Robbie Coltrane told an MSNBC chat that Hagrid’s official height in the films is 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m), and that J.K. Rowling picked it. Scaling the same 105 kg man to that height gives about 310 kg. Starting instead from Martin Bayfield, the 6 ft 10 in (2.09 m), 115 kg former England rugby lock who doubled for Hagrid, gives about 220 kg. Our 250 kg sits between the two.
The Ministry file that says 289 lb
There is one “official” number. The graphics team on the films made Ministry of Magic files for Deathly Hallows: Part 1, and Hagrid’s, reproduced in the Harry Potter Limited Edition book set, lists him at 11 ft 6 in and 289 lb (131 kg). That height is where the often quoted 11 ft 6 in comes from.
The two numbers do not fit together. 131 kg at 3.5 m is a body mass index of about 11, thinner than any living person could be, while the books call him enormously wide. It reads as a prop someone filled in, not a measurement, so we do not use it.
How heavy is Hagrid in the books?
Far heavier than in the films. When Hagrid first appears in Philosopher’s Stone, he is almost twice as tall as a normal man and “at least five times as wide”. Later books tone this down to about three times as wide.
Even if he were simply a normal 80 kg man at twice the height, the cube rule gives 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 times the weight, or 640 kg. Read literally, twice as tall, five times as wide and (say) twice as deep makes 20 times an ordinary man: about 1.6 tonnes. Somewhere in that span is the Hagrid Rowling describes, which is why he breaks chairs and struggles through doorways.
How the films made him big
Robbie Coltrane was 6 ft 1 in. For wide shots, Martin Bayfield wore a Hagrid costume made 25% larger than Coltrane’s, with tubes of cold water stitched into the fabric to keep him from overheating, and an oversized head built by Nick Dudman’s makeup effects team. The head was static in the first film and gained moving eyes and mouth from Chamber of Secrets on.
About 550 lb (250 kg) by our estimate for the 8 ft 6 in film Hagrid. A Ministry file prop says 289 lb, but that is far too light for someone of his size.
How tall is Hagrid?
In the films he is officially 8 ft 6 in (2.59 m), a height Robbie Coltrane said J.K. Rowling chose. In the books he is almost twice a normal man’s height, and the Ministry file prop gives 11 ft 6 in (3.5 m).
Is there an official weight for Hagrid?
Only a prop. His Ministry of Magic file from Deathly Hallows: Part 1 lists 289 lb (131 kg). Neither the books nor Rowling give a weight.
How heavy would Hagrid be in the books?
At least 640 kg if he is shaped like a normal man at twice the height, and over a tonne and a half if you take “five times as wide” literally.
Who played Hagrid’s body double?
Martin Bayfield, a 6 ft 10 in former England rugby player. He wore a costume 25% larger than Robbie Coltrane’s and an oversized Hagrid head, and also played young Hagrid in Chamber of Secrets.
