How heavy is a Minion?

170 kg375 lb

A Minion would weigh about 170 kg (375 lb) by our estimate. Illumination has never published a weight, or even an official height. We assume a Minion is about 1 m tall, like a 4-year-old, and half as wide. A capsule that size, as dense as a human body, comes out at roughly 170 kg.

Where the 170 kg comes from

There is no official number to start from. Illumination’s films never give a Minion’s weight, and we could not find a height in any studio material either. Fan sites often quote 3 ft 7 in (1.1 m), but without a source. So the 170 kg is our own estimate, built from three guesses.

Height: Minions are short and child-like; their creators said that short stature was part of their appeal. The World Health Organization’s median height for a 4-year-old boy is 103.3 cm, so we use 1 m. Shape: Minions are yellow and capsule-shaped, so we treat one as a capsule 1 m tall and 0.5 m wide: a cylinder with a half-sphere at each end. That holds about 0.164 cubic metres, or 164 litres.

Density: living bodies are close to water. Fat weighs about 0.90 kg per litre and lean tissue about 1.10 kg, and the standard Siri equation gives about 1.04 kg per litre for a body that is a quarter fat. 164 litres at 1.04 kg each is 170 kg.

Why it is so heavy

A real 4-year-old boy of the same height weighs only 16.3 kg (WHO median). The difference is the shape. A child is slim, with thin arms and legs, while our Minion is a solid barrel half a metre across all the way up, ten times the volume of a small child.

The width matters most, because volume grows with the square of it. Shrink the Minion to 0.4 m wide and it drops to about 113 kg; widen it to 0.6 m and it climbs to about 235 kg. Height matters less: a 0.8 m Minion would weigh about 129 kg and a 1.2 m one about 211 kg. Minions also come in different builds, short and chubby, medium, or tall and thin, so no single weight fits them all.

Where Minions come from

The Minions first appeared in Despicable Me in 2010, created by character designer Eric Guillon with directors Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud. They began as muscular thugs working for Gru and were simplified, step by step, into small, child-like figures in goggles and overalls, with one or two eyes. Coffin liked the simple shape: he said even a plain ball can be animated to look sad or angry.
