How heavy is a Mario coin?

164 kg362 lb

A Mario coin would weigh about 164 kg (362 lb) by our estimate, if it were solid gold. In Super Mario 64 a coin is 40% as tall as Mario, so about 60 cm across for a 150 cm Mario. Nintendo gives no weight, and the 3 cm thickness is our assumption, since those coins are flat sprites.

Where the 164 kg comes from

We found no game, guide or film that gives a weight for a coin, so the 164 kg is our own calculation. It rests on Super Mario 64, one game where coin size can be read straight from the data. In the decompiled source, a yellow coin is a flat square 64 units wide and 64 tall, and its collision box is 64 units high as well. Mario’s own hitbox is 160 units tall when he stands, so a coin is 40% of his height.

For Mario’s height we use 150 cm, the figure in a pamphlet for the 1986 Japanese anime film Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!. Life-size figures sold in Japan stand 150 or 155 cm. At 150 cm, one game unit is about 0.94 cm and a yellow coin is about 60 cm across.

The game draws coins as flat sprites with no thickness, so the 3 cm is our assumption. A solid gold disc 60 cm across and 3 cm thick holds π × 30 cm × 30 cm × 3 cm, about 8,480 cm³. Gold has a density of 19.3 g/cm³, so the coin comes to about 164 kg (362 lb). Double the thickness and the weight doubles too.

Lighter and heavier guesses

Coin sizes change between games, and later 3D games model coins as real discs without publishing their size. If you picture a coin about as wide as Mario’s head, 30 cm across and 3 cm thick, the same arithmetic gives only about 41 kg (90 lb), a quarter of our estimate, because halving the width cuts the weight to a quarter.

Super Mario 64’s other coins are bigger. Red coins are drawn 70 units wide (about 66 cm) and blue coins 100 units (about 94 cm). At 3 cm thick those come to about 196 kg and 400 kg. Make a yellow coin a tenth as thick as it is wide, 6 cm, and it would weigh about 327 kg.

What a gold coin would be worth

The best-known attempt to price a coin came from the website Movoto. It worked from Super Mario Bros. 3, where a coin is about as big as Small Mario, used actor Bob Hoskins (Mario in the 1993 film) as the scale, and put the gold in one coin at about $508,000.

That figure depends on the gold price on the day. The Boar, a Warwick student paper that reported it, adds the obvious catch: in a world with endless gold lying around, gold would not be worth much.

Questions

How much would a Mario coin weigh in pounds?

About 362 lb (164 kg) by our estimate, for a solid gold coin 60 cm across and 3 cm thick, the size a coin has next to Mario in Super Mario 64. A smaller, head-sized coin 30 cm across would be about 90 lb (41 kg).

How big is a coin in Super Mario 64?

About 60 cm (2 ft) across. The game’s data makes a yellow coin 64 units wide, against Mario’s 160-unit height, so it is 40% as tall as he is.

Does Nintendo say how much a coin weighs?

Not that we could find. Nintendo has not published a size or weight for coins, so every figure, including ours, is a calculation from how big they look next to Mario.

How much would a real gold Mario coin be worth?

Movoto put the gold in a Super Mario Bros. 3 coin at about $508,000, sizing it against Bob Hoskins. The value moves with the gold price, so it is only a snapshot.
