How heavy is Po?

118 kg260 lb

Po weighs 118 kg (260 lb), according to his character profile on DreamWorks’ official Kung Fu Panda website, which also gives his height as 6 ft 2 in (188 cm). That is a little more than an average adult giant panda, which weighs 100 to 115 kg (220 to 254 lb).

Where the 260 lb comes from

The number is official. Po’s page on DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda website, as archived in April 2016 after the release of Kung Fu Panda 3, explains his fighting style by saying the traditional styles of kung fu are not a good fit for “a six-foot-two-inch, 260 pound panda”. Converted, 260 lb is 117.9 kg, which we round to 118 kg.

The figures are older than that page. In May 2008, a few weeks before the first film opened, ESPN The Magazine described Po as a 6 ft 2 in, 260-pound “power guy” in a piece about the film’s martial arts, which were worked out by DreamWorks animator Rodolphe Guenoden.

None of the films says a number out loud. They just call him fat, most famously when Po tells Tai Lung he is not a big fat panda but “THE big fat panda”. We found no DreamWorks material giving him a different weight in the later films.

Po next to a real giant panda

Real giant pandas are not small either. Wikipedia gives an average adult weight of 100 to 115 kg (220 to 254 lb), with the biggest males reaching up to 160 kg (350 lb). The Smithsonian’s National Zoo says wild males weigh up to 113 kg (250 lb) and females rarely reach 220 lb. Po’s 118 kg puts him just above the average and right around the top of a wild male.

His height is where he stands out. Real pandas walk on all fours, 60 to 90 cm tall at the shoulder and 1.2 to 1.9 m long from nose to tail. Po’s 188 cm upright matches the longest real pandas, so for his size his weight is quite ordinary. His round look comes more from the cartoon styling than from the numbers.

Measured like a person, it is a different story. A man 1.88 m tall and 118 kg has a body mass index of 118 ÷ 1.88², about 33, which doctors class as obese.

Why the weight matters in the story

Po’s bulk is the point of his kung fu. The official profile says Master Shifu realizes Po has to use his panda nature and his body, “including his generous belly and rear end”, and Po ends up creating his own style out of what looked like weaknesses.

In the first film his padding makes him almost immune to Tai Lung’s nerve attack, which only tickles him. Shifu trains him by using food as the reward, ending with a test where Po has to win a single dumpling from his master.
