Chewbacca weighs 112 kg, about 247 lb, and stands 2.28 m (7 ft 6 in) tall. Both Star Wars continuities agree on it: today’s canon, in a 2014 Disney app and DK’s 2025 book Star Wars Life Size, and the older Legends books. For a male Wookiee that is on the lean side, as the canon average is 150 kg.
The films never weigh Chewbacca, but his height is official: StarWars.com’s Databank lists him at 2.28 m. His weight comes from tie-ins. Wookieepedia’s canon article cites Star Wars Journeys: Beginnings, a 2014 Disney Publishing app for iPad and iPhone, for 112 kg, and DK’s Star Wars Life Size (2025), a book that prints characters at their real size, for 247 lb. Those are the same weight in two units.
Unlike Darth Vader and Yoda, Chewie did not get a new number when Disney reset the timeline in 2014. Wookieepedia’s Legends article gives the same 112 kg, from Pablo Hidalgo’s Star Wars: Head-to-Head Tag Teams (Scholastic, 2011), and the same 2.28 m, from The Essential Guide to Characters (1995). Some older stories were looser: Marvel’s Star Wars comics often call him 7 feet tall, and the Super Star Wars games on the Super Nintendo made him 8 feet.
DK’s canon book Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know (2015) gives the average male Wookiee 150 kg and the average female 100 kg. Chewie is 38 kg below that male average, even though at 2.28 m he sits in the middle of the canon height range of 2.23 to 2.54 m. The Legends books describe a smaller species, with males around 2.1 m and 125 kg, which still makes him lighter than a typical male despite being taller.
He also has plenty to keep up. The Complete Visual Dictionary says an adult Wookiee needs 3,500 to 6,000 calories a day, up to about three times what an adult human needs.
Peter Mayhew played Chewbacca from 1977 until The Force Awakens (2015). George Lucas cast him mainly for his height, 7 ft 3 in (2.21 m), so the costume’s head and hair account for the last few centimetres. Wikipedia notes that Mayhew had pituitary gigantism, not Marfan syndrome as is often reported. He died in 2019 at 74.
The original trilogy suit was made from yak hair, rabbit hair and mohair, with no ventilation. A rebuilt suit for Revenge of the Sith added a cooling system under the fur. For The Force Awakens, several new suits were made from yak hair and a little mohair on Lycra, and Mental Floss reports they were about 7.5 ft tall and got washed and conditioned two or three times during filming. No reliable source gives a weight for any of the suits.
Finnish basketball player Joonas Suotamo first doubled for Mayhew in the more physical scenes of The Force Awakens, then took over the role in The Last Jedi, Solo and The Rise of Skywalker. Wikipedia lists him at 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m) and 105 kg (231 lb), so the actor alone is already within a few kilos of Chewie’s official weight.
2.28 m, about 7 ft 6 in, according to StarWars.com. Peter Mayhew, who played him for nearly 40 years, was 7 ft 3 in (2.21 m), and Joonas Suotamo is 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m).
In canon, about 150 kg (331 lb) for a male and 100 kg (220 lb) for a female, according to Star Wars: Absolutely Everything You Need to Know. Older Legends books gave males about 125 kg.
He tells Han he is 190 years old in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and canon puts his birth around 200 years before the Battle of Yavin. That makes him about 200 in A New Hope.
Darth Vader, just barely. Canon gives Vader 120 kg in his armour, 8 kg more than Chewie’s 112 kg, even though Chewie is 25 cm taller.
No official figure has been published. The film suits are made mostly from yak hair and mohair. The original had no ventilation, and the Revenge of the Sith suit added a cooling system under the fur.
