How heavy is a Spiny Shell?

15 kg33.1 lb

The blue shell (officially the Spiny Shell) weighs about 15 kg (33 lb) by our estimate. Nintendo has never given its weight or its size. We took a spiked shell about 60 cm across and scaled a real giant tortoise’s shell down to that size, which gives roughly 10 to 24 kg.

Where the 15 kg comes from

No Mario Kart game, manual or guide gives the Spiny Shell a weight or a size, so we worked it out from a real shell. We assumed it is about 60 cm (2 ft) across, two fifths of Mario’s 150 cm. The closest real thing is a tortoise shell, and the biggest tortoises are Aldabra giant tortoises: adult males average 250 kg with a 122 cm carapace, females 159 kg with a 91 cm carapace.

Weight grows with the cube of size. Shrinking a male to a 60 cm shell gives (60 ÷ 122)³ × 250 kg, about 30 kg for the whole animal. A female shrunk the same way comes to about 46 kg. A 2020 study that dissected Hermann’s tortoises found the shell alone was 33.5% to 52.3% of body mass. That puts a 60 cm shell at 10 to 15.5 kg on the male figures and 15 to 24 kg on the female ones.

Both ranges meet at about 15 kg, and the Spiny Shell also carries a ring of spikes, so we went with that. It is a ballpark, not a measurement, and the size is the biggest unknown: a 40 cm shell would weigh only 3 to 7 kg.

How big is the blue shell?

It depends where you look. In Nintendo’s artwork, drivers hold it up in one hand like a ball: Peach in Mario Kart DS, Donkey Kong in Mario Kart 7, Bowser and Toad in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There it is roughly the size of the driver’s head. In the race itself it looks much bigger as it swoops down on the leader, and Super Mario Wiki notes that Mario Kart 7 made it larger than in earlier games, a design Mario Kart 8 reused.

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) a Koopa Paratroopa, the Koopa General, wears one as his own shell and flies into Mario and Donkey Kong with it. We picked 60 cm as a middle ground between a shell you can throw one-handed and one a Koopa can live in. At 15 kg it would weigh about a fifth of Mario’s 70 kg.

Wings, spikes and flying

The first blue shells, in Mario Kart 64 (1996) and Super Circuit, slid along the ground. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003) gave it wings so it flies over the track. In a 2003 developer interview, Mizuki explains that it began as Koopa Paratroopa’s special item, the Winged Shell, and was made to explode because just hitting players felt too weak. It lost its wings again from Mario Kart 7 on, though Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and the movie bring them back.

A real 15 kg flier would be one of the heaviest birds that can get off the ground. Male great bustards weigh up to about 18 kg and need wings spanning 2.1 to 2.7 m. The shell’s little feathered wings are barely wider than the shell, so it is fair to say it does not fly by flapping.

Questions

How much does the blue shell weigh in pounds?

About 33 lb by our estimate (15 kg). Depending on how thick you assume the shell is, a 60 cm shell comes out anywhere from about 22 to 53 lb.

Is there an official weight for the blue shell?

No. Nintendo has never given a weight or a size for the Spiny Shell in any game, manual or guide. Every figure you see, including ours, is an estimate.

Is the blue shell heavier than a green shell?

Probably, a little. A 2023 University of Leicester student physics paper put a green shell at 3.35 kg, assuming a 10 kg Koopa Troopa and the same tortoise shell ratio we used. The blue shell is the same kind of shell plus spikes, and our 15 kg also assumes it is bigger.

What is the blue shell’s official name?

Spiny Shell. Nintendo has called it that since Mario Kart 64, where the manual also calls it the Spiny’s Shell. “Blue shell” is the fan name, though Nintendo’s own update notes and the 2023 movie use it too.

Why is the blue shell so hated?

It goes straight for whoever is in first place, so it often wrecks a lead right before the finish. Kotaku called it Mario Kart’s most hated item in 2014, while arguing it is actually the best one. Director Hideki Konno said it was added so “everyone was in it until the end.”
