How heavy is $1 million in $100 bills?

10 kg22 lb

One million dollars in $100 bills weighs about 10 kg (22 lb). That is 10,000 notes, and every US banknote weighs roughly 1 gram whatever its value. Stacked flat, the notes make a pile about 109 cm (43 in) tall, or 100 straps of $10,000 that fit in a small backpack.

How the 10 kg is worked out

One million dollars divided by $100 is 10,000 notes. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing says a note weighs about 1 gram regardless of denomination, so 10,000 × 1 g = 10,000 g, or 10 kg.

In pounds, the US Currency Education Program puts it at 454 notes per pound. 10,000 ÷ 454 comes to 22.0 lb. Both figures are rounded, so treat 10 kg (22 lb) as a close approximation rather than an exact weight; the paper bands around the straps add a few grams more.

The notes are not really paper in the everyday sense. Federal Reserve notes are printed on a blend of 75% cotton and 25% linen, and the BEP says a note takes about 4,000 double folds before it tears.

How much space it takes up

Every current US note, from $1 to $100, measures 6.14 by 2.61 inches (156 by 66.3 mm). The BEP set this size with the series of 1928, when the older notes of 7.375 by 3.125 inches were shrunk to today’s format.

A note is about 0.0043 inches (0.11 mm) thick. The Currency Education Program says a stack one mile high would hold more than 14.5 million notes, and 63,360 inches ÷ 14.5 million gives the same 0.0043 in per note. So 10,000 notes stacked in one pile stand about 43 inches (109 cm) tall.

The volume works out to 156 × 66.3 × 1,092 mm, roughly 11.3 litres. Split into ten bundles about 11 cm (4.3 in) thick, that fits in a small daypack with room to spare.

Straps and bundles

Banks and the Federal Reserve count cash in fixed packages. A strap is 100 notes of the same denomination held by a single band, and a bundle is 1,000 notes made of ten straps. For $100 bills, a strap is worth $10,000 and a bundle $100,000.

Under the American Bankers Association color standard, a strap of $100 notes carries a mustard band. A million dollars in hundreds is therefore 100 mustard straps of about 100 g each, or 10 bundles of about 1 kg each.

Why the denomination matters so much

Since a $1 note and a $100 note weigh the same, the weight of a sum of money depends only on how many notes it takes. $1 million in $1 bills is one million notes and about 1,000 kg (roughly 2,200 lb), a hundred times heavier than the same amount in hundreds. In $20 bills it is 50,000 notes, about 50 kg (110 lb).

The $100 is the largest note the US issues today; production of the $500, $1,000, $5,000 and $10,000 notes ended by 1945. The Federal Reserve counted 19.9 billion $100 notes in circulation at the end of 2025. At about a gram each, that is roughly 19,900 tonnes of hundred-dollar bills.
