How heavy is the Armored Titan?

20 t44,100 lb

The Armored Titan weighs about 20 tonnes (roughly 44,000 lb) by our estimate. Attack on Titan only gives its height, 15 m. A titan that size has abnormally light flesh, about 4.7 tonnes, and a 10 cm shell of stone-hard armour over half its body adds about 17 tonnes more.

Where the 20 tonnes comes from

The only official number is the height: 15 m (49 ft), from Kodansha’s Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia. Weight grows with the cube of height, so we start with a 70 kg, 1.73 m adult. 15 m is about 8.7 times taller, and 8.7 × 8.7 × 8.7 is about 650, which gives roughly 46 tonnes of ordinary flesh. Titan bodies are abnormally light (Hange is surprised by how little a titan’s head weighs), so, as on our Colossal Titan page, we take about a tenth of that: 4.7 tonnes.

Then the armour. An adult like that has about 1.8 m² of skin. Scale it up 8.7 times in each direction (8.7 × 8.7 is about 75) and the titan has around 138 m² of skin. Covering half of it with plates 10 cm thick makes 6.9 m³ of armour. At 2,500 kg/m³, a bit lighter than granite, that is about 17 tonnes. Flesh plus armour comes to about 22 tonnes, which we round to 20.

Every input except the height is our own call. The plates cover most of the body, but they are segmented and leave the joints, cheeks and backs of the knees bare, so half is a middle guess. Isayama has also said he modelled the titan on wrestler Brock Lesnar, so it is bulkier than an average adult, which would push the flesh up a little.

Why the armour slows it down

The plates are hardened skin, the same hardening other shifters use for crystals and claws. They stop cannon fire and snap the steel blades of the Survey Corps’ gear, and early in the story they let the Armored Titan charge straight through Wall Maria’s inner gate. Marley later calls it “Marley’s Shield” and sends it in to soak up enemy artillery.

The cost is speed. Fully armoured, it can only keep up a moderate run. In its first fight with Eren (chapter 44 of the manga, season 2 episode 7 “Close Combat”), Reiner drops the plates behind his knees and suddenly moves much faster. The story never says whether that is because of the weight or the stiff joints, but shedding even a few square metres of 10 cm stone would remove tonnes.

The armour can also be missing altogether. During the attack on Liberio, Reiner manages only a half-formed titan without most of its plates, which by our numbers would weigh closer to 5 tonnes.

Questions

How tall is the Armored Titan?

15 meters (49 feet), according to the Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia. That is the same height as Eren’s Attack Titan. Reiner himself is listed at 188 cm and 95 kg.

Is there an official weight for the Armored Titan?

No. The guidebooks give its height and Reiner’s human weight, but no weight for the Titan itself. Any number you see, including ours, is an estimate.

What is the Armored Titan’s armour made of?

Hardened skin, according to the official guidebook. It is the same hardening ability the Female Titan and Eren use, and it behaves like stone, which is why we gave it the density of rock.

Why does Reiner take off his armour?

For speed. The full armour keeps the Titan at a moderate run, so in his fight with Eren he sheds the plates behind his knees to move faster. The trade-off is that those joints become a weak spot, which Hange and Mikasa use against him.

Which is heavier, the Armored Titan or the Colossal Titan?

The Colossal Titan, by far. At 60 m it is four times as tall, and by the same reasoning it weighs about 300 tonnes, around 15 times our 20-tonne estimate for the Armored Titan.
