How heavy is Wailord?

398 kg877 lb

Wailord weighs 398 kg (877.4 lb), according to its official Pokédex entry, and measures 14.5 m (47 ft 7 in). That is the official game figure, not a realistic one: a real whale that long would weigh around 23 tonnes, so Wailord is roughly 58 times lighter than its size suggests.

As heavy as …

Where the number comes from

The figure is the Pokédex weight the games give for Wailord: 398.0 kg, or 877.4 lb, at a height of 14.5 m (47 ft 7 in). Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared, list exactly the same numbers as Sword and Shield.

None of its Pokédex entries explains why it is so light. The only hint is its category, the Float Whale Pokémon. The entries mostly talk about its size instead: Ruby calls it the largest of all identified Pokémon, and Emerald says that by filling its lungs to maximum capacity it can dive close to 10,000 feet.

How light that really is

A large blue whale is about 27 m long and weighs around 150 tonnes. Shrink that same shape down to 14.5 m and the weight falls with the cube of the length: 150 t × (14.5 ÷ 27)³ ≈ 23 tonnes. Wailord is rounder than a blue whale, so if anything a real animal its size would be heavier still.

At 398 kg, Wailord weighs about 1.7% of that, or roughly 58 times less. Whales are about as dense as water, so a 23 tonne whale takes up about 23 cubic metres. Packing 398 kg into that much space gives about 17 kg per cubic metre, around 60 times less dense than water and only about 14 times denser than air. That is why the usual joke is that Wailord must be mostly air.

How it compares with other Pokémon

Wailord was the tallest Pokémon from its debut until Eternatus arrived in Sword and Shield at 20 m (and 950 kg). It is still the tallest Pokémon that is not a legendary, ahead of Dondozo, which is 12 m long and even lighter at 220 kg.

Its weight is nothing special. Snorlax, at only 2.1 m, outweighs it at 460 kg, and the heaviest Pokémon, Celesteela and Cosmoem, are listed at 999.9 kg. Wailmer, its pre-evolution, is 2.0 m tall and 130 kg: Wailord is over seven times taller but only about three times heavier.

What its weight does in battle

Low Kick and Grass Knot get stronger the heavier the target is, and reach their maximum power of 120 against anything over 200 kg. At 398 kg, Wailord always takes the full-power version, despite being so light for its size.

Wailord learns Heavy Slam, which hits harder the more the user outweighs the target. In Sword and Shield it learns it at level 21. With its 398 kg, the move has 120 power against targets up to about 80 kg, 100 up to about 100 kg, 80 up to about 133 kg, 60 up to 199 kg, and 40 against anything heavier. Against Snorlax it only gets the weakest version.
