How heavy is a 16 lb bowling ball?

7.26 kg16 lb

A tenpin bowling ball can weigh at most 16 lb (7.26 kg), the limit in the United States Bowling Congress rules. There is no minimum, and many adults bowl with lighter balls, often 12 to 15 lb (5.4 to 6.8 kg). Every ball is about the same size, roughly 8.5 in (21.6 cm) across.

What the rules say

The USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual is short on this point: the weight of the ball shall not exceed 16.00 pounds, and there is no minimum weight requirement. Size is fixed instead. Every ball must be between 8.500 and 8.595 in (21.59 to 21.83 cm) in diameter when it is made, whatever it weighs.

The rules also limit how unevenly the weight can sit. For a ball over 10 lb, the two halves of the ball may differ by no more than 3 oz (85 g) top to bottom, side to side, or thumb to fingers, and lighter balls get tighter limits of 2 oz or ¾ oz. No single part of the ball, whether core, weight block or coverstock, may be denser than 3.80 g/mL, which rules out pure metals.

The 16 lb cap is more than a century old. Before it, the Kegel bowling company’s history notes, some Chicago bowlers of the early 1900s used 20 lb balls and a few men used 22 lb ones. The American Bowling Congress settled the matter at its 1913 convention, limiting balls to 16 lb and requiring them to be evenly balanced.

What weight do people actually use?

The usual starting point is about 10% of your body weight, up to the 16 lb maximum. Storm Bowling gives that rule of thumb, and Bowling.com adds that men typically start with 14 to 15 lb balls and women with 12 to 14 lb. Both stress that control matters more than the number: a ball that is too heavy strains the arm and shoulder.

Heavier does hit harder. Bowling This Month cites an old USBC study in which a 16 lb ball hitting the pins at 18 mph with a 4-degree entry angle carried a strike 98% of the time, against 92% for a 15 lb ball thrown the same way.

Why light bowling balls float

Because every ball is the same size, weight decides whether it sinks. A ball 8.5 to 8.6 in across has a volume of about 5.3 to 5.4 litres, so by our maths the same volume of water weighs about 11.6 to 12 lb (5.3 to 5.4 kg). Balls lighter than that are less dense than water and float; heavier ones sink.

This is a common classroom demonstration. The American Association of Chemistry Teachers says a 12 lb ball has just about the same density as water, and uses an 8 lb ball to show one floating. A 16 lb ball, at roughly 1.35 times the density of water, goes straight to the bottom.

Smaller games, lighter balls

Tenpin is not the only kind of bowling. Duckpin and five-pin bowling use a ball of 4.75 to 5 in (12.1 to 12.7 cm) across that weighs between 3 lb 6 oz and 3 lb 12 oz (1.5 to 1.7 kg). Candlepin bowling uses an even smaller ball of about 4.5 in (11 cm) weighing 2 lb 4 oz to 2 lb 7 oz (1.0 to 1.1 kg), less than a sixth of a 16 lb tenpin ball.

Questions

How much does a bowling ball weigh in kg?

The heaviest legal tenpin ball, 16 lb, weighs 7.26 kg. A 14 lb ball weighs 6.35 kg, a 12 lb ball 5.44 kg and a 10 lb ball 4.54 kg.

Is there a minimum weight for a bowling ball?

No. The USBC sets a maximum of 16 lb but says there is no minimum weight requirement. The ball still has to be 8.500 to 8.595 in in diameter, so light balls are simply less dense.

What weight bowling ball should I use?

A common starting point is about 10% of your body weight, up to 16 lb. Men often start with 14 to 15 lb and women with 12 to 14 lb, but a ball you can swing comfortably and control is better than a heavier one.

Do bowling balls float?

Light ones do. A regulation ball displaces about 11.6 to 12 lb of water, so balls lighter than about 12 lb float and heavier ones sink.

Why can’t a bowling ball weigh more than 16 lb?

Because the rules say so. The American Bowling Congress adopted the 16 lb limit in 1913, after some bowlers had used 20 and even 22 lb balls, and the USBC keeps it today.
