A set of ODM gear weighs about 10 kg (22 lb), going by MOVIC’s officially licensed 1:1 replica from 2015, the closest thing to a real one. Attack on Titan itself never gives a weight. The replica’s blades are plastic, so working gear with steel blades would probably weigh more.
The number is the weight of a real object: the 1/1 scale 立体機動装置 (vertical maneuvering equipment) made by MOVIC, a Japanese maker of licensed anime goods. Pre-orders opened in October 2014 on MOVIC’s website at 99,800 yen before tax, about $915 to $1,000 at the time, with delivery in late January 2015. Japanese entertainment site Crank-in listed the total weight as about 10 kg (22 lb), and Kotaku, SoraNews24 and Otaku USA reported the same figure.
The set includes the gas cylinders, the main case, two grips with blades and spare blades. The main unit measures about 37 × 32 × 14 cm (14.5 × 12.5 × 5.5 in), and a blade with its grip is about 88 cm (35 in) long. It is built from aluminum, ABS plastic and silicone. It can be worn for cosplay, but it does not fly.
The manga, the anime and the official guidebooks describe how the gear works but give no weight for it. So 10 kg is not a canon figure, just the weight of the most faithful full-size copy anyone has sold.
In the series the gear is a harness that covers most of the body below the neck. A main housing on the lower back holds two independent spools of steel wire. Two hand grips fire the grappling hooks, reel the wire in and double as sword hilts. Gas from two cylinders fires the hooks and spins a fan that drives the winch.
The gas comes from iceburst stone, a mineral found only on Paradis Island that turns into gas when it warms up. According to the official guidebook, it is stored in canisters made of iron bamboo. The blades are made of ultrahard steel, which can only be produced in the blast furnaces of the factory cities. Soldiers carry spare blades in boxes at their thighs and swap them as they dull or snap.
Four years after the Battle of Shiganshina (chapter 103), the blades and their boxes were made smaller, and most of the Survey Corps moved to an anti-personnel version with pistols and Thunder Spears, worn on the upper back.
Almost certainly, mostly because of the blades. The replica’s blades are ABS plastic, which has a density of about 1.05 g/cm³. Ordinary steel is about 7.85 g/cm³, so a steel blade of the same size would weigh roughly seven and a half times as much. The story says ultrahard steel is light enough for soldiers to carry many blades without being slowed down, but it is still steel.
Even at 10 kg, the gear is a real load for its users. Levi is listed at 65 kg in the official guidebook and Mikasa at 68 kg, so the replica alone would add about a sixth of their body weight, carried while swinging between rooftops at speed.
