How heavy is the Dragonslayer?

130 kg287 lb

The Dragonslayer weighs about 130 kg (287 lb) by the most popular fan estimate. Berserk never gives an official weight or size, only that it was “too big to be called a sword”. Measured against Guts, who is 204 cm (6 ft 8 in) tall, fan calculations land anywhere from about 120 kg to over 200 kg.

Where the 130 kg comes from

No chapter of the manga and no guidebook gives the Dragonslayer a weight or measurements. The Berserk Official Guidebook does list Guts himself at 204 cm and 115 kg, so every estimate starts by measuring the sword against him in a panel. The usual fan figure, reported by Brazilian sites Critical Hits and Ovicio, is about 130 kg (often rounded to 300 lb), for a sword around 1.8 m long.

The most careful version is a 2020 paper in the University of Leicester’s student Journal of Physics Special Topics. Four students put the sword at 2.0 m overall, with a 1.5 m blade 26 cm wide and 4 cm thick on average. Treated as a steel slab, the blade is 1.5 × 0.26 × 0.04 = 0.0156 m³, and 0.0156 × 7,850 kg/m³ comes to about 123 kg.

Read the art a little bigger and the number climbs fast. A blade 1.79 m long, 27 cm wide on average and 3.5 cm thick (the measurements of one steel replica) is 0.0169 m³, or about 133 kg of solid steel. Some fans go much higher: Yattatachi cites a SpaceBattles thread at 400 to 500 lb (181 to 227 kg). The sword’s size shifts from panel to panel, so the honest answer is a range, with 130 kg in the middle of the serious calculations.

What the manga shows

The narration that first introduces it says it was more a lump of crude iron than a sword, huge and heavy and rough. In chapter 93 the blacksmith Godot (Godo in the Dark Horse translation) explains its origin: a king called for a sword that could kill a dragon, and Godot forged this. His lord found it crude and useless, and Godot had to flee. It sat in storage until Guts picked it up and cut down an apostle in two swings.

The story makes its weight clear in other ways too. After Guts is captured, it takes two Holy Iron Chain Knights to lift the sword, and Isidro ends up pinned underneath it when he tries (chapter 141). Nobody but Guts has ever wielded it properly.

Kentaro Miura explained his thinking in the Official Guidebook interview. Earlier manga had big swords, but he felt they were only drawn big and never seemed heavy. He wanted the Dragonslayer to feel like something a man with a pro wrestler’s build might manage to swing once or twice.

Real replicas weigh far less

A full-size steel replica made by Rudix117 in 2023 is 2.32 m long, with a 1.79 m blade that is 3.5 cm thick and 22.5 to 31.5 cm wide. It weighs 47 kg (104 lb), a little over a third of the 133 kg that a solid slab of those measurements would weigh.

Display swords sold online are much lighter still: a 52 in (1.32 m) stainless steel version is listed at 10.5 lb, under 5 kg. The well-known Man At Arms episode from 2015 forged Guts’s earlier sword from old railroad track, not the Dragonslayer itself.

Could anyone swing it?

The Leicester students worked out what their 123 kg sword would demand. Swinging it through a half circle in half a second, as Guts does in the anime, takes about 6,400 W. Just holding it level with the elbow at the waist needs a biceps force of around 44,000 N, roughly the effort of lifting 4,500 kg. A 3 kg zweihänder needs about 60 W per swing. Their conclusion was that a real person would hurt themselves long before an enemy.

Questions

How much does the Dragonslayer weigh in pounds?

About 287 lb, using the popular fan estimate of 130 kg, which many fans round to 300 lb. Fan calculations run from about 270 lb (123 kg) to 500 lb.

Is there an official weight for Guts’s sword?

No. Neither the manga nor the Official Guidebook gives one. The guidebook lists Guts at 115 kg, so at 130 kg the sword would outweigh him.

How long is the Dragonslayer?

There is no official length either. Fans who measure it against the 204 cm Guts put it at roughly 1.8 to 2.3 m (6 to 7.5 ft), about as tall as he is.

Who made the Dragonslayer?

The blacksmith Godot, when a king demanded a sword that could slay a dragon. His lord rejected it as crude and unusable, and it stayed in Godot’s storage until Guts took it up.

Not a real one. That is a common misreading from fan translations. Guts does use it to beat Grunbeld, an apostle whose true form is a dragon.
