How heavy is Howl’s Moving Castle?

1,000 t2,200,000 lb

Howl’s Moving Castle weighs about 1,000 tonnes (roughly 2.2 million lb) by our estimate. Studio Ghibli never gave it a weight, or even a fixed size. A walking heap of metal plates, wooden rooms and chimneys about 20 m long and 15 m high, mostly hollow inside, comes out close to 1,000 t.

Where the 1,000 tonnes comes from

There is no official number to start from. Japanese Wikipedia’s entry on the film sums it up: the castle’s height changes from scene to scene, and its weight is unknown. The best real-world reference is the full-size castle at Ghibli Park in Japan, which is about 20 m (66 ft) tall.

So we treat the castle’s main body, without the legs, as a lumpy block about 20 m long, 15 m wide and 15 m high. That is 20 × 15 × 15, or about 4,500 cubic metres. For the average density we used the Empire State Building as a yardstick: its official 365,000 US tons spread over 37 million cubic feet works out at about 320 kg per cubic metre, steel, stone, concrete floors and all. The castle is mostly rooms, pipes and thin metal shells, with no concrete floors, so we took about two thirds of that, 220 kg per m³. 4,500 × 220 is about 990 tonnes, which we round to 1,000.

Both inputs are guesses. A smaller, emptier castle (3,000 m³ at 150 kg per m³) comes to about 450 t. A bigger one built as solidly as a skyscraper (6,000 m³ at 320 kg per m³) comes to about 1,900 t. The four bird legs would add something on top, but the body is where the bulk is.

Held together by a fire demon

Calcifer, the fire demon in the hearth, does all the work. He supplies every bit of energy the castle uses, from walking to lighting, cooking and hot baths. He also holds the scrap together and keeps it in shape, so when he leaves the hearth the whole thing quickly falls apart. Late in the film it does, and it comes back at the end as a flying castle.

The film’s sound team had to make it sound heavy. The castle was imagined as a moving loom, and metal noises turned out to be grating, so they used creaking wood instead: carpenters were brought into the studio to build, scrape and break timber for the recordings.

The castle in the book, and the real one

Diana Wynne Jones’s 1986 novel has a different castle: a tall, black building with four thin turrets that seems to be made of blocks of coal, “bespelled to hold together”. The book never explains how it moves. Miyazaki wanted to work that out, which is how it ended up on chicken legs.

You can now walk inside one. Ghibli Park in Aichi opened its Valley of Witches area on 16 March 2024, with a castle about 20 m tall. Its two-storey interior has about 289 m² of floor space, with Calcifer’s furnace, Sophie’s room and Howl’s bedroom. Some parts move, and it puffs smoke a few times an hour. The park has not published what it weighs.

About as heavy

Questions

How much does Howl’s Moving Castle weigh in pounds?

About 2.2 million lb by our estimate (1,000 tonnes). It is not an official figure: Studio Ghibli never gave the castle a weight.

How tall is Howl’s Moving Castle?

The film never says, and its size shifts from scene to scene. The full-size version at Ghibli Park is about 20 m (66 ft) tall.

What powers Howl’s Moving Castle?

Calcifer, the fire demon bound to the hearth. He powers its walking, lights, stove and hot water, and his magic holds the scrap together. Without him the castle collapses.

Is the castle the same in the book?

No. In Diana Wynne Jones’s novel it is a tall black castle with four thin turrets, apparently built from blocks of coal. The walking heap of chimneys and turrets on bird legs is Miyazaki’s design.

Can you visit Howl’s Moving Castle?

Yes. A full-size castle about 20 m tall stands in the Valley of Witches at Ghibli Park in Aichi, Japan, which opened in March 2024. Visitors can go inside and see Calcifer’s furnace, Sophie’s room and Howl’s bedroom.
