How heavy is the Z Sword?

2,660 t5,860,000 lb

The Z Sword weighs about 2,660 tonnes (roughly 5.9 million lb) by a popular fan calculation. Dragon Ball never gives an official weight, only that the sword is extremely heavy. The figure comes from the crater it makes when Kibito drops it, and other fans argue it must be far lighter.

Where the 2,660 tonnes comes from

No guidebook, manga page or episode gives the Z Sword a number. The 2,660 t figure is a 2025 fan calculation posted on the VS Battles Wiki, based on manga chapter 472 (“The Zeta Sword” in Viz’s English edition). Gohan hands the sword to Kibito, who cannot hold it: it drops and sinks into the ground.

The calculation measures the blade in that panel, using Gohan (about 1.75 m) for scale, and gets a blade 1.05 m long and 0.14 m wide, a flat area of 0.145 m². It then assumes the ground of the Sacred World of the Kai is as strong as limestone, which crushes at about 180 megapascals. The ground gives way, so the sword must press down with at least 0.145 × 180,000,000 ≈ 26.1 million newtons. Divided by Earth’s gravity (9.81), that is 2,657,673 kg, or about 2,660 tonnes.

How seriously to take it

It is a ballpark built on two guesses: that the Kais’ ground is limestone, and that their planet has Earth’s gravity. It also treats the sword as resting on the ground, when Kibito actually drops it. A falling object hits harder than its weight, so the same crater could come from a lighter sword.

For scale: a steel blade of the same size, even a thick 1 cm, would weigh about 11 kg (1.05 × 0.14 × 0.01 m³ × 7,850 kg/m³). At 2,660 t the Z Sword is over 200,000 times heavier than that.

Not everyone buys the big number. On the Kanzenshuu forum, fans point out that Goku swings the sword around and passes it to Gohan with one arm, while in an anime filler episode 40 tonnes of training weights (10 t per limb) were enough that he had to go Super Saiyan to move. By that logic the sword weighs under 10 tonnes.

The sword in the story

The Z Sword sits point-down in a rocky pillar on the Sacred World of the Kai. Kibito insists no mortal could ever use it, and in chapter 472 Gohan cannot budge it until he turns Super Saiyan. Even then he says it is heavy but does not seem to hold much power. When Goku arrives (chapter 478) he tries it and agrees it really is very heavy.

In chapter 479 the Supreme Kai conjures a block of Katchin, the hardest metal in the universe, and Goku throws it at Gohan. The sword shatters. The legend was never about the blade: an old Supreme Kai was sealed inside it, and he steps out of the pieces. Its one real benefit, Gohan notes, was that hauling it around made his arms much stronger.

Questions

How much does the Z Sword weigh in pounds?

About 5.9 million pounds, using the fan estimate of 2,660 tonnes. There is no official figure in pounds or kilograms.

Is there an official weight for the Z Sword?

No. The manga and anime only show that it is extremely heavy: Kibito cannot hold it and it sinks into the ground. Every number, including 2,660 t, is a fan estimate.

Who can lift the Z Sword?

Gohan pulls it out as a Super Saiyan and trains with it, and Goku swings it around too. Kibito cannot lift it. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Future Trunks trains with his timeline’s Z Sword and fights Dabura with it.

What broke the Z Sword?

A block of Katchin, the hardest metal in the universe, conjured by the Supreme Kai to test the blade. Goku throws it at Gohan, and the sword snaps on impact.

Who is sealed inside the Z Sword?

Old Kai (Elder Kai), a Supreme Kai from fifteen generations back. A 2014 Saikyō Jump feature adds that Beerus sealed him there after an argument about 75 million years ago.
